Department of Physics

About the Department

The Department of Physics was established in the year 1971,offering physics as ancillary subject, for other science major students and upgraded as a major department from the year 1988. At present B.Sc degree programme in Physics is offered under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). M.Sc. programme in Physics was started in the year 2005, also in the CBCS pattern. In addition to the traditional core papers in Physics, the curriculum includes papers in the latest thrust areas like Medical Physics, Astrophysics, Information Technology, Electric Principles and applications, Energy Physics, Space Physics, Photonics, Non- Destructive Testing and Stellar Physics. The staff members are specialized in various fields like Photonics, Polymer Physics, Photoacoustic Spectroscopy, Astrophysics, Nano science and Technology, Energy and Environmental Physics. The physics lab is equipped with advanced equipments like Dip coating unit, Ultrasonic interferometer, Photo acoustic spectrometer and Polymeric nano material synthesizer which will be of much useful to the research scholars. Our staff members are sanctioned with both minor and major projects from UGC and DAE. Our staff also guide scholars for pursuing Ph.D Programme under part time. Students are encouraged to participate in summer/winter school programmes and training courses at IGCAR Kalpakkam, Indian Institute of Geomagnetism Tirunelveli, Kodaikannal Observatory, and Radio Astronomy Centre Ooty. Every year the department conducts Intercollegiate Seminars and Competitions to enhance the knowledge of the students and to bring out the hidden skills in them.

The students are also encouraged to participate in the Seminars and Competitions conducted by other colleges in and around Madurai. The final year students of both U.G & P.G have a chance to visit the reputed research institutes and places of scientific importance. The Department also takes care of the students by offering them Career guidance and Counselling.

Vision

Integrated Development of Urban and Rural Students and Empowering them for Social Transformation through Physics Education

Mission

To provide adequate facilities to master the theories and experiments in Physics through innovative teaching and evaluation strategies.

To enrich with scientific skills and temper to be a self-reliant and responsible Citizen of our Country.

To build AAC as a Science Policy advocacy Centre.
