1.History of Library

In the year 1970 Arul Anandar College was started under the name De La Salle College, Karumathur. The main objectives of the College Library is to cater the need of the student community who pursuit for higher studies. It has also an equal amount of responsibility to meet the need of the teaching staff for effective teaching and also for the further research programme of the staff, students and research scholar of the college.

The change of the management also resulted in the change of the name of the college as ARUL ANANDAR COLLEGE in 1973 under the Jesuit Management. Our college Library started with a volume of 1500 books on 18.8.1970.

In 1995 no separate library building was possible and in memory of the Silver Jubilee a Separate Library Building was built with an area of 11910 Sq.feet. The annual purchases of books are 2000 volumes per year and now the total volume of books touched 54000.

The working time of the college for academic programme for Government aided courses is 8.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. Self Finance course timings are 1.45 p.m. to 6.00 p.m. The college Library opens at 8.30 a.m. and is closed at 6.00 p.m. without closing the Library for lunch break.

All the Library documents are divided into eight sections such as magazine and periodical section, INFONET e- access point, Reference section, Book stack section, Theses and back volume section, Technical Section, reprographic section and Internet section.

As the open access system is in force all the library readers are free to enter the library and can choose there own books for reading at home. U.G. students are given three documents; P.G. A mile stone in the college history is the automation of the library. The inauguration of its digitalization was held on 22 April 2006 by Dr. T.A.V Moorthy, Director INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad. A new software SOUL and for this a latest version was purchased exclusively for the college library automation also fixed 2 OPAC system for students easily accessibility.

Statistical records are maintained in the library showing the records such as the number of books issued per day and the number of readers visits the library per day. A gate register is made available for the readers for signing when they enter the library. As an average at about 452 students visit the library everyday. The issue and return of books per day amount to about more than 100 books.

Usually books will be withdrawn from the students at the end of the financial year that is 31st March of every year. Afterwards the students are not lent books. They have to find their own way for their studies. This is the practice in all Institutions. But Arul Anandar College adopts a different method to remove this handicap.

Special arrangements are made to issue books to all students after march 31st. We have also made special arrangements to collect back the books on the last date of the examination. Defaulters will not be able to get their T.C. and mark statements without clearing the Library dues. This facility of borrowing books till the last date of the examination is the special feature of Arul Anandar College Library.

Each students or reader refers minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 documents per day. This means that a minimum of 1400 documents are referred per day.
