Department of History


The Department of History was started in 1980 to offer an intellectual environment for students to encourage a comparative and interdisciplinary approach to history. The Department is equipped with young and energetic faculty members, who are committed to innovative pedagogic methods and in historical research. It has a unique course structure that aims at providing employability to the students. The curriculum makes it possible for the students to get a comprehensive, and in depth knowledge in history. It enables them to appear for competitive examinations like Civil Service Examination, TNPSC Group I and II. The Department also conducts a UGC sponsored Career Oriented Certificate Course on Tourism and Hospitality Management in post college hour. The department regularly organises many National and State level seminars related to Archaeology, Socio-Cultural development of Tamil Nadu, Human Rights, Freedom Movements, Indian Constitution and Economic History of Tamil Nadu. The Department has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Thonmam Historical Research Trust, Dharmapuri and Zunheboto Government College, Nagaland to provide internship to the third year students, organise joint guest lectures, webinars, seminars and conferences. The Department of History conducts the State level De-Britto Quiz in History for college students and Father Trincal Quiz in History for School students in order to enhance the competitive spirit among the students. The department also hosts the HISTO-FEST an inter-collegiate cultural competitions to boost the cultural spirit among the students. To give a good learning experience to the students from outside the class room, the department organises annually a ten days National tour for third year UG History students, two days State level exposure for Second Year UG students and one day field visit for First Year UG students to the places of historical importance.
