Department of Economics


The Department of Economics of Arul Anandar College came in to existence in the year 1970-71 with the introduction of Undergraduate (BA) programme. The department started with the inception of the college proving to be one of the oldest departments of the college. Prof. S. Michael Samy, being the founder head of the department steered the initial phase of the department with sheer determination. The department is committed with imparting quality education to the students particularly coming from the rural packets. The department was upgraded as Postgraduate (MA) department in the year 1984-85. A lot of eminent luminaries adorned the department and laid their footprints. As a mark of progress, M.Phil. programme was started in the year 1990-91. The department added one more jewel to the crown by having recognised as the Centre for Research by Madurai Kamaraj University in the year 2001-02. The department has carved a niche for itself by producing sixty four (64) Ph.Ds so far. With the aim of creating employability skills among students, the department started offering Carrier Oriented Courses (COC) in the year 2005-06. The course structure that the department has at UG and PG level is a balance of theoretical analysis and quantitative reasoning. The faculty has made several contributions in the field of research by attracting three Major and five Minor research projects funded by UGC, ICSSR and MIDS. The department has the practice of organising seminars and workshops every year on a reqular basis. The department has the privilege of conducting zonal level competitions (Essay and Elocution) for the students of Economics of south zone in Tamilnadu entrusted by Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah trust in order to boost the competitive spirit among the students. The department has brought laurels to the institution by inviting eminent personalities in different occasions to spotlight current issues in Economics.
