ABOUT AAC LIBRARY

Arul Anandar College library is an integral part of the efficient teaching and learning process at AAC and it is a resource centre catering to the ever growing and superficial information and current requirements of the students, faculty members, and researchers. AAC Library is established with the intention of providing free access to printed materials and all other resources with the altruistic goal of educational enlightenment and for the welfare of our students.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Arul Anandar College library was established with a credit of 1500 books in 1970. The library functioned in the Britto Block with a carpet area of 1200 Sq.ft. In 1985 the library was shifted to the extended building of the science block and functioned there upto 1995 in 1730 Sqft area. As a tribute to the silver jubilee celebration of the college, the library got extended into a new building with a carpet area of 11,040 Sq.ft which was inaugurated by Most. Rev. Fr. M. Arokiyasamy SJ., Arch Bishop, Madurai. Today the library holds to its credit of 63,000 printed books, e-books, 117 printed journals, e-journals, magazines and newspapers.

INSTALLATION AND INAUGURATION OF LIBRARY SOFTWARE

Owing to technological advancement in the field of information, the library has been automated fully with ILMS, SOUL and LIPS iNET 5.0. The inauguration of library automation was held on 22nd April, 2006 by Dr. Moorthy, Director INFLIBNET, Ahmedabad. A new software SOUL and LIPS iNET 5.0 latest version was purchased exclusively for the college library automation. Two OPAC systems were installed to facilitate the students for easy accessibility. At present, new web based software LIPS.iNET 5.0 has been installed.

INFONET E-ACCESS CENTRE

INFONET e-access centre and browsing centre was established on 21.09.2011. A total number of 8 computer systems and one printer are allotted to this centre. The e-learning resources available in the library are CD, Spoken language video and Audios, Thesis index, periodical back issues index and online model question bank. Now a new INFONET e-access browsing centre was innovated in the first floor of the library (Rev. Fr. K.C. George Hall) with 10 computer systems.

RAMP FOR PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED USERS

In the year 2013, a ramp was constructed for an easy access of physically disabled students at the right side of the Library and wheelchairs are also available here.

COMPETITIVE SECTION

To cater to the needs of the aspirants of competitive exams, the library extended its wings as Competitive corner in 2013. This corner is adorned with 327 new books for competitive exams.

NEW WEB BASED LIBRARY SOFTWARE

In the year 2013-14 library has introduced new web based library software namely LIPS.iNET 5.0 for the library automation, this software was developed by Dolphin Software.

WEB OPAC (ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOGUE)

A web OPAC was launched in the year 2013. OPAC provides access to the Library database, it allows the users to know the library’s collection and the status of the Library Resources. OPAC permits the users to search the database by Title, Author, Subject and Accession Number of the book. Users can access Online Public Access Catalogue from any computer connected to the LAN.

CCTV CAMERAS

Nonstop reconnaissance is made through the CCTVs introduced in 2014. Totally 13 Surveillance Video Cameras supervise the movements in the library area, using 32’ monitors for the CCTV, so we are able to see the captures per second.

NEW ARRIVALS AND STAFF PUBLICATION DISPLAY SHELF

A new display shelf and safety locker were purchased, worth Rs.50,000, to exhibit the new arrivals (books, journals) and also to display the publications of our staff members.

LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT SYSTEM

In the year 2014-15 the library introduced a new Card system that is mandatory for all the students. Apart from the working hours students should utilize the library with this card to enhance their reading habit. The reading hours spent in the library are marked and verified by the library staff members and according to this hour the library assignment marks are given to them.

EXTENSION OF LIBRARY BUILDING

Library extension building was inaugurated on 25th November 2016 for the Periodical Section. This section has all the Subject Journals, Periodicals, Dailies, Thesis and Project and also back issues of the Journals. It occupies 3065 Sq.ft area.

Wi-Fi CONNECTION

Library was fully furnished with Wi-Fi connection at 2020. Speed is 50Mbps.

The mission is to provide free and open access to a broad range of materials and services to people of all ages and background.

OBJECTIVES

To facilitate student community for Higher Education and Research.

To enable teaching staff for effective teaching and research.

To extend facilitation for the development of the neighbourhood rural community in upgrading knowledge.

To develop perusing propensities and advance the advancement of learning.

MEASUREMENT ABOUT THE UTILITY OF THE LIBRARY

With the available statistical tools, an attempt was made to measure the usage of the college Library by the students. The average student’s entry in the library is about 452 students per day. The average number of books circulated per day is approximately 100. Each student or reader refers to a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 documents per day. It means that a minimum of 1400 documents are referred per day.

Membership

All the students, faculty members and employees of the college are eligible to be a member in the library. The registered members are issued a barcode Identity card to access the library documents. The College ID card is provided with barcode facilities to use the library services for all the staff and students of our college.

Outsider Member

Nearby village members of the academic circle shall be permitted to use the library, staff members of any academic institution or those who are preparing for higher studies, preparing the competitive exam can also become members.

Membership fee is Rs. 100/- per year.

Rules & Regulations

»  Strict Silence should be observed in the library.

»  Personal belongings such as Bags, Tiffin-boxes, Notebooks, etc., should be left at the property counter in the library entrance.

»  Books are lend to students on all working days.

»  Books are usually lend for a period of two weeks and may be renewed for a further period if those books are not in demand by other students.

»  Books should be returned on or before the due date indicated in the issue slip of the book.

»  Overdue fine of Rs.1 per day will be charged if the book is nor returned on time.

»  If the book is lost, the fine will be collected three times the book cost.

»  The librarian may ask for the return of any book even before the expiry of the due date.

»  Reference books such as dictionaries, year books, encyclopedia, General knowledge books and books labeled as Reference will not be lend.

»  Students are forbidden to make any marking or underlining in books and periodicals

»  Students are advised to examine and ascertain the conditions of the book at the time of borrowing itself. If there is any damage it should be immediately brought to the notice of the librarian. Otherwise the borrower will be held responsible for the damage book.

»  If a book is damaged or lost, the cost of replacing it with a new copy along with a fine will be recovered from the borrower. If one book is a set of books damaged or lost, the cost of replacing the whole set will be recovered.

»  All the students should produce their identity card at the time of library entry and borrowing books.

»  All the students should return all the library books a week before the last working day of the academic year.

»  Students are forbidden to use the website in the browsing Centre.

»  No outside / personal books are allowed in the library for reading purposes.

»  The Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited.

E- ENTRY AND RETURN COUNTER SECTION

This section is located at the entrance of the library with 1500 sq. ft. The activities of this section are:

  • Maintaining the property counter
  • Maintaining the entry and exit register
  • Returning of Books

REPROGRAPHY SECTION

This section is located at the right side of the entrance. Here there is one modern Xerox machine for reprographic documents.

Timing: 10.00 a.m to 12.00 p.m and 1.30 p.m to 4.30 p.m

REFERENCE SECTION

This Section is located at the left side of the library entrance with 1705 sq.ft. The reference books are arranged according to Colon classification code. Each and every row has its name of the subject guide, title name and row guide are also fixed in this Section.

This section contains general references like Dictionaries, Encyclopedia, Directories, Gazetteers, Handbooks, Manuals etc., and Subject reference books and personality development books. The books are mainly meant for in-house academic reference.


This section is located at the right side of the reference section. It has 1237 books on Competitive, Civil Services, TNPSC, Entrance Exams, Career development, Year books, Test of Reasoning and Aptitude books.


This section facilitates and encourages learning among physically challenged persons. One computer system for talk books access, 50 braille books, and a collection of talking CDs are available.


This section is located at the center of the library with 4770 sq.ft. Books are arranged by Colon classification code. Open access system allows members to freely choose books. Contains 55,000 documents.


This section handles compilation of requirements, ordering, classification, indexing, and processing of books. Also develops bibliographic databases. Located inside the stack room.


Located at the right side of the stack room. Provides a conducive ambience for research scholars.


This section is located at the first floor of the library with 3065 sq.ft. It is fully occupied with Journals and periodicals. The library has subscribed 117 Journals and Magazines including 9 Internationals. All the journals and magazines are displayed on comparable display boxes and one year back issues are also available inside this box.

All the periodicals are arranged according to the subject order. This section has 168 seats.


This section is located at the left side of the periodical section (First Floor). It has a twenty-year back volume collection which is 1561 bounded back issues of all subjects.


This section is located at the right side of the Periodical section (First Floor). Collections are divided subject-wise with color coding. It has 837 thesis collections in subjects like Economics, MCA, Philosophy, Mathematics, Physics, Rural Development, Science, and Tamil.


We joined as a member of the N-LIST UGC Library network programme from 2006 onwards. E-Books and E-Journals are accessible via N-LIST – INFLIBNET (“National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content”). The programme is funded by the MHRD to extend access to selected e-resources under UGC.

This section has 10 computer systems with one printer for e-access, free to all library members. Located on the first floor of the library.

The library utility services have two types one is open access system and another one is close access system. The close access system means that the user is not allowed in the stack room area, where the user writes the slip and gets the book and the Open Access system means the readers are free to enter the stack room and choose their own books. We follow an open access system for the welfare of the readers.

Our College library has an interlibrary loan scheme, that is a transaction of library Documents to the department libraries for the easy access of department staff and students.

We have 5K.V. UBS Power backup Batteries for Library. These Batteries can supply 5 hours of power during power failure.

WebOPAC

WEBOPAC allows the user to browse the entire library collection and provide the search facilities by Author, Title, and subject and also to know the membership status by internet.

Intranet OPAC

Two Systems were allotted for the intranet net OPAC. Its helps for the systematic accessibility of the with in the library area to reader


Another milestone of the college library is that history we had fixed 13 Surveillance Video Cameras in the library area for protection of the library documents and for healthy maintenance.

Exact place where the items are available is mentioned in the main stack section, Reference section, back volume section and in theses section we fix the indicators like row number, subject name and sub title of the subject.

Issue and return transaction of the document access has been speeded up because of the barcoding.

Library has collected college semester question papers from 1999 to till date for Student reference

Library has 160 comfortable reading seats for library users

Our staffs and students publications are being displayed in the publication display shelf.

Library has collected college magazines from 1970 onwards to till date for staff and student reference.

Library has gathered the college hand books from 2006 onwards to till date for staff and student reference.

Library had collected and maintained the separate section for local area historical documents.

Library has maintain the separate records for visitor’s opinion and suggestions for library improvement.
