The base of this academic programme is built on a firm but radical pedagogic premise of `Taking University Education towards Villages`- Taking cognizance of
the appalling poverty, socio-cultural ills, deprivations of educational opportunities that plagued the poor in the Usilampatti taluk of Madurai District, the
then college administration contemplated a socially relevant, people-centred and multi-disciplinary academic programme with the aim of creating catalysts of
social change. With the due approval from the then Madurai University, the B.Sc. Rural Development Science had its humble beginning in 1973 at Arul Anandar
College. Responding to the signs of the times the course has been elevated to M.Sc. level in 1983 and the Department became an approved centre for research
in 2001. The P.G programme is now restructured and modified as M.Sc Dairy Science and Rural Management from the acedamic year 2013-14.
