Department of English Literature


The Department of English Language and Literature is a unique department in Arul Anandar College as it facilitates promoting the communicative skills of the first generation-rural students and ensures their employability. It enlivens the Jesuit mission of preparing students to be men and women for and with others and thereby fulfilling the motto of the Society of Jesus: “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” which translates “For the greater Glory of God.” It prioritizes the formation of the rural students to make them good leaders and make them empower through teaching literature. The department hones their language skills as well as knowledge of literature through effective teaching. It creates awareness in students to identify their language skills and requirements of the job market. Accordingly, it has evolved a futuristic and socially relevant Outcome Based curriculum. In order to actualize the goals of the students, the department offers many technology-assisted language learning facilities. Besides, the department is keen in visualizing their career advancement.

Britto English Language and Literary Association activities give them umpteen opportunities to polish and exhibit their skills. One of the many strengths of the department is the Bridge Course in English which has one credit in the Curriculum. It is offered to all the first year UG students with the intention of helping them gain proficiency in English and express themselves fluently.

In addition to the above, the department organizes various activities, such as Inter-Collegiate Competitions, Conferences, Workshops, Webinars, Guest Lectures periodically. Some of the unique initiatives of the department are: ‘A Word A Week’, the display of a word on the notice board with meaning, along with Phonetic Transcription and usage of it in sentence, to enhance students’ vocabulary power. Readers’ Club was formed exclusively for the faculties and PG students. Monthly Quiz in History of English Literature for UG and PG Students. Thus, the department offers an all-round training in intellectual, cultural, social, emotional, physical, aesthetic, moral theatrical and spiritual aspects.

The Department extends its service to all the other departments of the college through General English classes. The syllabi are more innovative and student-centric. The syllabi is designed with a view to enhance the language skills, Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. They gear them up not only to acquire their language skills, but also imparts in them the career skills. The Department conducts The Annual Theatre Fest, an Inter-Departmental English Drama Competition for all the Self-Financed Programmes every academic year in order to promote students’ participatory and experiential learning. Oratorium, an Inter-Departmental Public-Speaking Forum, is organized every week to get rid of their stage fear and also to instill confidence in them to converse in English without any inhibition. The Department is blessed with a team of dedicated faculty who are showing their excessive care and attention to give holistic formation to the students to make them the agents of social transformation.
